This loop from Invermere traces the Columbia Valley south to Canal Flats and back, stitching together lake views, sculpted hoodoos, quiet ponds and classic hot springs. You’ll follow the Columbia River’s upper valley, framed by the Purcells to one side and the Rockies to the other, with plenty of places to pull over, walk a short trail, or just roll down the windows and take in the air.
You'll start off ascending to the highest point in the beautiful Panorama mountains, checking out all the famous ski hill has to offer and a susspension bridge! Then we're taking you slightly lower with a stop at the famous Hoodoos and then to the very bottom to see beautiful Columbia Lake nestled in the village of Canal Flats, the Columbia River’s official headwaters and a great beach for swimming at Tilley Memorial Park. On our way back we'll warm you up at the Fairmont Hot Springs, a stop at Windermere Wells for a very short hike to see a 90 foot deep pond and if you have a vehicle with clearance, an option to drive near the top of Mt Swansea with a short hike to the top to see the entirety of Columbia Valley River and the town of Invermere!
It’s an easy half‑day outing with lots of flexibility: linger in hot water, grab a picnic by the lakes, or treat it as a scenic sampler and come back to your favourite spots.
Expect a relaxed driving pace with frequent short stops, about 4-5 hours total including time to look around at each stop.
